Rounds 3 & 4 of the NZ Cross Country Championship - Martinborough & CheviotI was super nervous coming into the final round, 2 weeks earlier at the 3rd round I had my points lead shaved down a fraction. The weather in Martinborough turned bad right as all us riders were on the start line it started to pour with rain and never let up all day on top of this a southerly rolled in making for freezing conditions. This obviously didn't make for very pleasant riding but it also turned the track into a bit of a mess and created a lot of what we refer to as 'bottlenecks' which is where riders crash or get stuck in a tight section of track and block the way for other riders to get through. I had a few moments but I was able to minimise my mistakes and I kept going through to the finish and came away with a 5th place finish on the day. It could of been worse for me so I was happy with 5th and I still had the points lead. Now the final round was held in Cheviot which is roughly 1 hour north of Christchurch. Conditions were the polar opposite from the previous round, they hadn't had any rain for a while so it was extremely dusty making vision problems the order of the day.I got a good start and over the following 2 laps made my way into 2nd position. I didn't need to win the race on the day to win the championship so I was happy to sit in 2nd and play it relatively safe, but nearing the halfway mark in the race I made a mistake and nearly had a huge crash, one of those (shit that was close) moments so to speak. I thought I was fine but I must of damaged my foot somehow as I had a lot of pain in my ankle and it wasn't feeling right every time I went over some bumps. I began to think that I might of broken my ankle and my boot was just holding it all together. The pain was bearable so I just kept riding, but just slowed things up a little. Two of my competition were on the gas and caught & passed me putting me back to 4th place. Now I had studied the points coming into the race so I knew 4th would be enough for me to win the Championship given the riders that were in front of me at that time in the race, so I just needed to hold that position until the finish, which is exactly what I did. I had to check first just to make sure that I had won, before breathing a much needed sigh of relief. As a result I'm now happy to say I'm a two time National Cross Country Champion. Oh and the ankle turned out to be just bad bruising and some mild ligament tweaking so good news on that front as well. Once again I couldn't of done it without all the help of my fantastic sponsors and supporters, everyone that helped me in the pits and of course my girlfriend Sarah for keeping me together.
