Round 1 New Zealand Cross Country Championships - WaipukurauI was real nervous coming into this race, I hadn't had the best lead up as far as results were concerned and I'm sure a lot of people had written me off as a contender for the title. I felt pretty confident in myself but I definitely needed a result to confirm it, and I got it. The track was fast, dry and really dusty so the start was really important, I got off the line in an average position but managed to move up into 8th after the 1st few turns. The 1st lap of the race was mayhem, I couldn't see a thing the dust was that bad and I had way to many close calls, I managed to move into 5th by the end of the 1st lap but I was beginning to think I wasn't fast enough to win. I'm not running a big tank on the bike this year and a lot of my competition are so this means I need an extra fuel stop than most of the others, so basically I just need to be faster to have an extra pit and still win, so I was getting a little worried when I wasn't gaining a whole lot on the leaders. But as the race wore on the track got a whole lot rougher and I was able to make a lot of time on the others and eventually take over the lead around the half way stage of the race. From there on I was able to maintain a steady fast pace and slowly increase my lead over 2nd place. At the finish I took the win over 2nd place Sam Greenslade and 3rd Michael Vinning, its a good start to the series but I've still got a long way to go. Also I have to say a big thanks to my girlfriend Sarah & Scotty Brooker from Race Pace Services for handling my pits on the day they did and awesome job. Oh and last weekend I raced a round of the Bushrider Cross Country series aswell which was another good day at the races with me taking a win there aswell.
